GSM intercom solution

April 2014 Access Control & Identity Management

A sleeping giant has stirred in the world of domestic visitor control; after a long period of virtual stagnation that saw very little innovation or evolution in this field, the convergence of two seemingly unrelated silos of access control is giving homeowners a truly flexible solution.

Intercom systems have, of course, been a staple of visitor management since time immemorial, their apparent robustness making them the preferred choice of anyone wanting to learn the identity of visitors before granting access. However, in spite of – or perhaps because of – the intercom’s comfy place at the top of the domestic access control food chain, little effort has ever been put into making the basic operating principle more versatile, which has in turn cast a rather unflattering spotlight on some of the system’s shortcomings.

Like most access control solutions, intercoms are only effective if the residents are actually home. Ergo, should a would-be intruder ring the intercom and only be greeted by silence, this is to all intents and purposes the equivalent of a huge neon ‘Come inside’ sign painted above the entrance. There can be few things more appealing to the criminal mind than the thought of an unoccupied residence simply aching to deliver unto them a veritable pirate’s bounty of loot. They view the absence of inhabitants – even a temporary absence – as one less hurdle they have to cross on the way to their dastardly end-goal.

What they did not count on, however, was the emergence of a technology that scoffs at the very idea of geographical limitations: that of GSM.

Following hot on the heels of the revolutionary SupaHelix multi-user access control and monitoring system is G-SPEAK: a brand new range of GSM-based intercom systems from Centurion Systems.

Consisting of the basic G-SPEAK Classic and the more advanced G-SPEAK Classic+, this innovative visitor screening range uses mobile technology to enable wireless communication between a Calling Module – the ‘gate station’ typically mounted outside the property – and up to four mobile phones depending on the model.

The main benefit of this system is, of course, that one can answer one’s intercom from absolutely anywhere in the world with GSM network coverage and thus always appear to be home, which is a major plus from a security point of view.

Both the G-SPEAK and the G-SPEAK Classic+ have been launched and will be available through Centurion’s branches and its many authorised distributors.
