Keep control over your data

March 2014 Information Security

Companies looking to gain control and ensure compliance of data stored on, and moving between mobile devices connecting to their network, can now do so securely and with peace of mind, as a result of Trend Micro’s Safesync.

Available in both a personal and enterprise version, Safesync for enterprise provides file sharing and sync capabilities with data protection to give IT managers stewardship of their sensitive data.

Safesync is deployed both on premise and in a private cloud, provides enhanced data protection features such as DLP, persistent file encryption and document tagging that ultimately provide data protection, all the while still enabling user productivity with integrated file sync and share capabilities.

“A number of our South African enterprise customers are increasingly looking for mobile security solutions that enable data protection, encryption and in some cases authentication across multiple devices,” says Gregory Anderson, country manager at Trend Micro South Africa. “This is with particular relevance to those who are embracing BYOD strategies. That said they are reticent to deploy some of the more commercially available solutions that do not offer the security they would require for them to ensure they do not fall prey to vulnerabilities, as they want these to link into their own data centres and use their own storage.

“It is with this that Safesync provides them the same functionality as commercially available services such as Dropbox (as an example), however is able to provide encryption across multiple devices, through a single system, and that which is auditable and compliant,” he adds.

The need for a file sharing solution with more robust management and security features is according to Trend Micro, twofold. Firstly in the wake of local compliance needs such as “PoPI”, with which companies will soon need to comply with, businesses can use Safesync to secure company and customer information across multiple devices securely. Here, in the event that a device is lost or stolen the data content is encrypted and thus safe, ensuring compliance.

Secondly, with the recent breaches of businesses such as Dropbox and their more public file sharing services, the surety of a private service is becoming increasingly attractive for enterprise customers who are barring their employees from using these public services.

Data protection features inherent in Safesync include:

* Data loss prevention,

* Audit logs/reports,

* The ability to confine synch by file type as well as the tagging of sensitive data,

* Persistent file encryption, and

* SSL secure transfer.

To this end customers of Safesync are also assured of productivity gains that include remote mobile and Web access, sharing and collaboration of files, support for multiple platforms, the option to use selective sync, Active Directory and LDAP integration, automatic sync, incremental sync, an Outlook toolbar plug-in, as well as media sharing and view and the option to use team folders.

Cost savings can be garnered through the ability to pool storage across the business, the option to leverage and make use of your existing infrastructure as well as the option to avoid, what can be costly, data duplication.

“Safesync is a safe, secure and integrated solution that is built, designed and supported by security experts that aims to ensure the enterprise-level security you are used to, all the while allowing you to enable your employees the freedom to engage and work in an interconnected mobile world,” concludes Anderson.
