40 Gbps Ethernet switch solution

February 2014 Infrastructure

Distributor Drive Control Corporation (DCC) has announced the availability of Mellanox’s Switch X-2 based SX1012 Ethernet switch. The cost-effective solution for small-scale high-performance computing, storage and database deployments provides 12 ports of 40 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) at the smallest footprint in the industry with two systems fitting into a single 1U height, in a standard 19-inch rack. Each port can be configured to provide up to 56 GbE line rate to further enhance the performance capabilities of the switch and can also be split into four standalone 10 GbE interfaces. This allows the SX1012 to be used in migration scenarios from 10 GbE to 40/56 GbE server and storage connectivity.

“High performance and low latency on the ports is notable and the SX1012 allows customers to future proof installations as they may require the use of 10 Gb today, however, may need 40 Gb tomorrow. The Switch SX1012 is ideal for high-performance networking environments such as mining organisations that store geological maps which comprise very large file sizes or JSE-listed companies that need fast access to large amounts of data,” says Raul Del Fabbro, storage division manager at DCC.

The SX1012 switch solution is based on Mellanox’s Virtual Protocol Interconnect (VPI) technology and can run the full capabilities of MLNX-OS to enable the switch to work in mutual Ethernet and InfiniBand environments for maximum usability in various scenarios.

“The Mellanox SX1012 Ethernet switch is a great fit for small-scale storage and database applications, providing very high-throughput capacity in a compact enclosure,” says Gilad Shainer, vice president of marketing at Mellanox Technologies. “We are seeing increased market demand for small-scale 40 GbE switches that can enable the creation of small high-performance clusters, storage solutions and database appliances. The new SX1012 switch delivers the right solution for these environments, removing the need for larger, more expensive switch platforms.”
