Customer-centric mission in integrated solutions

November 2013 Integrated Solutions

Reputed to be the world’s largest pure-play integrated fire and security solutions company, Tyco has perfected its high-tech one-stop-shop philosophy. As part of the American parent company, Tyco South Africa’s mission is to advance safety and security by finding smarter ways to save lives, improve businesses and protect the environments where people live and work.

According to Cedric Greeves, sales manager for Tyco Integrated Fire and Security Business in sub-Saharan Africa, the organisation’s 69 000 employees in over 1000 locations around the world all take a consultative approach to delivering tailored solutions to meet clients’ safety and security challenges. With a long track record of satisfying customers, the organisation is able to tailor-make solutions that are both application and industry specific.

Training is provided for the technical team both locally and internationally in order to ensure that they are up to speed on the latest technologies and trends and that they have the necessary skills to ensure the successful implementation and maintenance of client systems. Tyco’s southern African operation seeks to ensure that its engineers are, where applicable or required, certified to install, integrate and maintain both Tyco and other third-party products. The company also seeks to comply with local requirements and is therefore registered with local bodies such as the FDIA and PSIRA.

With clients in a number of sectors, including mining, financial services, energy and transportation and with experience leveraged on large contracts such as the Gautrain; Impala Platinum and Zimplats, the company is in a strong position to engineer an integrated solution that mitigates client risk.

Based at Tyco International’s sub-Saharan headquarters in Johannesburg with branches across the country, the company offers the sophistication of a major international corporation and extensive hometown knowledge. “We are able to offer customers a total solution from risk assessment and conceptualisation, through design, supply of Tyco and other third-party products, to installation, commissioning and maintenance of the system together with other related services such as guarding, monitoring and response all from a single service provider,” said Greeves.

The company is able to provide CCTV, access control, intrusion and perimeter detection systems on the security side as well as fire detection and suppression solutions. “We also provide the platforms that allow clients to integrate all of these solutions into a single front-end for ease of monitoring and reaction. All products are selected and designed for forward and backward compatibility to ensure that solutions are offered the flexibility to change as customer needs change or allow clients to sweat these assets for much longer in response to increased budgetary constraints. All programming and configuration of systems is managed by our team,” added Greeves.

“While we have developed a niche for ourselves in offering total security and fire solutions, we do outsource some aspects of our deployments such as the cabling and mounting work on the larger projects to third parties. This is especially pertinent in regions outside South Africa where it allows us to subcontract work packages to local installers. This is advantageous for all parties. The local installers benefit from the extra income and we are able to second the ongoing maintenance work to them on completion of the project, the client enjoys the benefit of a reduced installation cost as we don’t have to mobilise a large team from South Africa there is a much quicker response to breakdowns,” said Greeves.

In terms of maintenance agreements, Tyco believes that the job does not end at the commissioning stage. “We offer the full gambit of maintenance packages, including scheduled preventative maintenance, corrective maintenance, spare parts as well as a full supply of consumables and system optimisation,” he continued.

Greeves pointed out that each member of the Tyco team pledges to promote the shared values of integrity, excellence, teamwork and accountability. This is reflected in the manner in which employees interact with clients and with the communities in which they operate.
