Combing through access

November 2012 Access Control & Identity Management

Comb Communications offers a Web-based solution to the personal management of intercom access systems. The company’s Web application allows worldwide management of an intercom system.

Comb’s first three pilot systems were installed early in 2004. Towards the end of 2004, the first systems were introduced in Gauteng with the birth of the B1000. In collaboration with Centurion Systems, in 2005, its systems spread to all regions of South Africa.

2009 saw the launch of its second offering, the G2, which offered clients new features, including Nova code hopping remotes, pin codes, time barring triggers, etc. In 2010 Comb started looking at internationalisation of the system, and exhibited at IFSEC in the UK with Centurion Systems.

The MKII was launhed in 2011, a year which also saw the addition of a SIM chip and Tap-Tap (temporary access pin codes), which enables access via sending a pin code via SMS. Backlit LEDs were added to the keypads in 2012.

Web features of the MKII include:

* Remote, instant programmability from anywhere in the world.

* Reliable, detailed and comprehensive reporting.

* Mass communication via the website or bulk text messaging. The same applies to bulk e-mailing.

* Ease of management of remotes, via the Internet.

* Efficient management of residents’ entry behaviour.

* Management of telephone numbers and pin codes.

* Regular software upgrades to ensure constant access to updated technology.

Reporting capabilities include:

* Gate access report: successful and attempted openings are recorded, covering all access operations, ie, number dialled, PIN codes and remote controls used and the time, date and description of each opening.

* Telephone usage report: the monthly telephone usage report enables the user to split telephone usage between the units in the complex. The report shows unit number, number of openings, overall system usage and total portion of the overall bill due by each unit owner.

* Audit report per complex: reporting is available for gate openings of each unit for a specified period and any changes made to records, including date, time, author, unit number and nature of changes are recorded.
